This week was all just practicals. We spent Monday and Tuesday working on constructing a melamine box but adding plastic laminate to the sides. (These practicals will lead into our next project, melamine cabinet) after the box was done we went onto making countertops.
The countertop was made out of MDF, Plastic laminate, and solid wood on the edges.
After cutting out the required pieces of mdf, we glued and stapled parts of them together, then began working on the plastic laminate. We used contact cement to let the laminate bind to a non porous surface (MDF) We did one side first, trimmed it down with a straight cut router then did the same for the other side, then the top. Afterwards we took a router with a 22.5 bevel and rounded the corners then filled it down till it was smooth. The glue up was next. It was a bit tricky because we had reinforced the sides with #20 lamelos, and the sides were wanting to tip, but after a few adjustments I got it to fit pretty good.
After that was done I cleaned it up and was done. Last day was optional (I didn’t know that 😭)
We got the opportunity to work with veneer and make a diamond pattern, put it in the hot press and sand it down.
Fun week of practicals.
